Theft to fund gambling addiction has been a common occurrence in the news but this time the money was actually stolen from the bingo fund.

This story takes us to Hamilton, New Jersey where the president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Colonial Volunteer Fire Co. faces theft charges for taking $23,000 in bingo money from the organization.

58-year-old Denise Weber was arrested according to police spokesman Detective Lt. Jeffrey Martin following an investigation that started December 7th. It was initially reported that approximately $20k was missing from the auxiliary account.

Detective Mark Watson discovered that cash from the ladies auxiliary bingo events was not deposited on several occasions, which came to an estimated $23k.

Weber is due to retire in the new year but will now face theft charges and there was no information released as to what she did with the money.

Sherri L. Bauerle, president of the Colonial Volunteer Fire Co., said that everyone at the fire company is "shocked and dismayed" by Weber’s actions.

There were 21 cash deposits going back to 2014 that were not made but Bauerle released a statement assuring bingo players that the thefts had no bearing on the prizes

The statement said, "This resulted in the inability of the auxiliary to support the general operation of the fire company, the acquisition of furniture, payment to scholarship asardees and other charitable contributions.”

The publisher of the story, NJ.com, describes the organization saying:

“The Ladies Auxiliary of the Colonial Volunteer Fire Co. is a separate nonprofit organization from the fire company, according to nonprofit registries. Its mission, documents say, is to raise funds for the Colonial Vol. Fire Co.

“Listings show the organization's tax-exempt status was automatically revoked by the Internal Revenue Service in August for failing to file documents with the federal government for three straight years.

“In 2011, the organization reported $180,692 in revenue, $166,891 in expenses and net assets of $113,739, public records show.”

Several thefts have left companies as victims and with all the security these days it’s surprising that employees are able to get away with it for any period of time. Do you think that there could be better checks and balances in place to prevent internal theft?
