The Bingo Revival - How Big Will It Be?

30 March 2010

In recent years bingo has undergone a major revival and looks set to expand and grow further in the coming years, which is great news for the whole bingo community!

In the UK alone, bingo comprises a total annual stake of around £1.1 billion, that's a massive figure that is set to grow even more. The national game of bingo is now big business and this is not just for the bingo halls, HM Customs and Excise collect around £115 million in duty incurred by bingo each year. Also big name companies such as virgin are also investing heavily into the bingo scene, which is good for players and Richard Branson.

Bingo - Back From The Brink Of Extinction

The height of bingo popularity came during the 1970's. The local bingo hall provided a cheap and enjoyable form of entertainment that allowed people to socialise without breaking the bank. this trend came to an abrupt end during the early 1990's. The game became stale and was given an un 'cool' image by the hoard's of OAP'S that occupied the bingo halls. however unlike the dinosaurs bingo has been saved from extinction, with the popularity of the game rising at a staggering rate.

This new and growing surge of popularity has been partly due to the vigorous marketing campaigns executed by the bingo companies. Television and literature campaigns for bingo are now being promoted in the UK and companies are attempting to reinvigorate the game by adapting and modernising some of the antiquated 'olden day' language that seemed to keep it stuck in the past, this change has been accelerated by the huge success of online bingo sites, the important vocabulary is now more like text speak with the odd mention of the age old favourites. (See our bingo lingo section to help you learn this special language quickly)

Who Benefit's From Bingo?

It may surprise you to hear that it is not just the bingo halls that are profiting from the new version of the game. The internet has changed the bingo industry for ever, and for many people this can only be a positive factor. Players can now access their favourite bingo hall at the switch of a button and the click of a mouse, all from the comfort of their own home. What is interesting to note is that the majority of the players are female players, seeking a lively, non-threatening and welcoming environment to play in. Chat rooms have become the sibling of socialising in a bingo hall (we have our own bingo forum that you can use to chat to members too!) - with the added advantage that there is no closing time, you can talk to who you want and you don't have to get dressed up to do it.

The online bingo scene is going to continue to grow, with new online bingo sites launching every other month it really does seem like the sky's the limit, this means more excitement for all the loving fans of what is quickly becoming the PLANET'S favourite game!
