Suspected Money Launderer Hides £40k in the Toilet

We’ve heard of flushing money down the toilet as a figure of speech but to actually find cash in a toilet is another story. Police in Birmingham, England found nearly £40,000 in cash hidden in 41-year-old Helen Ross’ toilet tank.

She’s a suspected money launderer who claims to won the cash gambling at online casino and bingo sites; however the judge doesn’t believe her story and seized her stash under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Police were at the home because of a drug warrant and it was then that they discovered £38,610 stuffed in the back of the toilet. The findings didn’t stop there as authorities also found that she was the proud owner of a £40,000 Range Rover Evoque plus she had a new kitchen and conservatory in her home, which was a social housing property.

When police applied to magistrates to seize the cash through the Proceeds of Crime Act, she argued it claiming that her fortune had come through gambling winnings.

Ross had been on maternity leave and previously worked time in addition to claiming several benefits. With no source of income other than the claimed benefits police immediately became suspicious of her lavish lifestyle and hidden cash flow.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Det Con Yvonne Barwani, from the Economic Crime Unit, said: “There was insufficient evidence to charge Ross with drug dealing following the warrant − but that doesn’t mean we can’t pursue POCA proceedings to seize money or assets we believe derive from criminality.”

“She could not explain how she had been able to afford any of this expenditure,” Det Con Barwani said.

“Ross has flaunted her ‘wealth’ in the community for many years, driving expensive cars and going on lavish holidays, despite having very little legitimate income.

“I’m sure news that we’ve seized the money will be welcomed by members of the community who get rightly frustrated at people living a high-earner lifestyle without actually working for the money.”
