There’s nothing like the love of a mother and one brave mum was shot outside of a bingo hall in an attempt to save her son from armed thugs.

Marie Calder’s son, Scott Calder, met her at a Gala Bingo club to give her cash for bingo but a group of gunmen began shooting leave both injured.

The incident, which took place back in 2014, was prompted by Scott’s alleged theft of £38,000 in cocaine heard Manchester Crown Court during the trial.

James Instone, 33, of Blackley, Mark Barker, 45, of Miles Platting, and James Henry, 29, of Blackley are accused of the assault but deny the allegation.

In her description of the event, Marie said, “I got into Scott’s car. He said ‘can you pick up that drink up for me please’, it was Lucozade or Ribena. He took a little drink of it and threw it out of the window. (As he did that) the door just swung open - the driver’s side.

“I seen three males trying to drag Scott out and I was pulling him. I seen one of them was James Instone, at the front, trying to pull Scott out.

“I didn’t really see the other two, I only seen one of them had a bald head, behind James Instone, he was stocky build. He was doing the same as James Instone, trying to get Scott out. I was pulling Scott in by his body.”

In May of 2014, following the shooting, Marie’s nephew wanted to give her a treat for getting shot. He husband met up with him at a local pub and came home with £50,000 in cash.

“We counted some, but there was too much there to count”, Marie said. “Too much money. I’ve never seen that much money in my life. We put it in the attic - that was the safest place I thought. I didn’t spend any of it - I didn’t want to.”
