Karen Moore had stolen £120k from her great uncle because of her online bingo habit.

Moore said: “I became addicted and couldn’t stop.

“I didn’t realise how much money I had spent until it got out of control.

“As soon as I realised, I went straight to the police and told them everything.”

At one point during one night of online bingo she spent £10,400. Moore was accessing her great uncle’s, Francisco Barerra, bank account after he entered a nursing home in August 2010.

In total, Moore stole £119,678.44 from the account before turning herself into police and somehow she was under the impression that she had only blown £30,000. Payments to the nursing home were in arrears and Barerra ended up passing on 3 months prior to the case going to trial. Despite Moore’s actions, he didn’t want her to be prosecuted.

Barerra told police: “I don’t take anything to do with my savings. My family takes care of them.
“Karen is like a daughter to me. I’m very shocked to find out about this.”

Moore pled guilty to the charge of embezzlement and sentencing will take place next month.

Moore said: “I don’t want people to think I am some lowlife who stole from an old man. It wasn’t like that.
“There is much more to it than that. I didn’t mean for it to happen and I didn’t mean to hurt anyone. I’m not proud of what I did.

“My great-uncle was more upset I hadn’t told him I was having problems than he was about the money.
“I did my best to pay back as much as I could.

“We are a close family and they are standing by me. I don’t know what I would do without them.”
