Will 20% VAT mean the end for Land based Bingo Halls?

The vat increase is big news up and down the country, and as the weekly grocery bill goes through the roof we are left to wonder whether the hike is going to spell bad news for some traditional forms of entertainment.

One area of the entertainment industry which has already been badly hit by factors such as the smoking ban and the depressed economy is the typical local bingo hall. With VAT increasing from 17.5% to 20% the cost of a night out and a few games is certainly going to rise.

Latest studies suggest that the average amount we spend on a night out at a bingo hall is over £30, and if you think of the transport, a few drinks, a bit to eat and the games themselves it is easy to see that figure is no exaggeration.

While the future of typical bingo halls may be uncertain, there is no doubt that online bingo is going strong and likely to go from strength to strength in 2011. Even without the current economic crisis the internet was fast gaining popularity as the place to have some cheap bingo games and a bit of fun whenever you wanted .

One hugely attractive option now is going to be having a go at the free bingo sites. Costa Bingo, City Bingo and Sing Bingo, among others, offer gamers lovely free games which can help you pass some time in good company and with the chance of winning some money; a bit like going to the bingo hall but without spending those thirty pounds on it. Add to this some other big names with big prizes, such as Sun Bingo and Cheeky Bingo, and it clear that on choice and value online bingo is very strongly placed right now.

Will you be among those people swapping the bingo hall for the internet?
