A bit of inclement weather prevented players from getting to Mecca Bingo halls. A recent snow fall affected one of Rank Group’s properties and also one of the UK’s most profitable bingo operators.

Footfall at Mecca decreased 7% on a like-for-like basis for a period of eight weeks until 5th May. Management has placed most of the blame on the bad weather and the difficulty players have had getting to and from the club.

“The snow clearly had an impact, especially in bingo, given the demographic base,” said Nicholas Batram, an analyst at Peel Hunt, also known as Rank Group’s house broker.

Fortunately, the online Mecca Bingo brand has brought numbers up due to its popularity among players.

Ian Burke, chairman and chief executive of Rank Group said,
“Unsurprisingly, our venues were affected by the persistent freezing weather conditions during the third quarter. Against that backdrop, we feel our businesses have performed reasonably well.”

Another contributing factor to losses is also the 20% tax placed on bingo and gaming machines inside the bingo clubs. There has been talk of this tax being higher than that of the taxes placed on any other form of gambling.
