UK Gambling Commission to Investigate Game Shows

Some popular television programs in the UK are being investigated by the Gambling Commission. The results of the investigation will determine if the shows are based on gambling. Gambling involves a game of chance for money as well as the player’s risk of losing money; however these game shows do not involve any of the participant's own cash do they?

Deal or No Deal, Red or Black and Play Your Cards Right all face the potential requirement to submit applications for appropriate licenses should they be classed as gambling. The time these programs are broadcasted may also be effected.

"The Gambling Commission does not seem to think that there is any skill element to the show. Even though at the beginning of the show, contestants do not have to stake any of their own money, the argument is that once they've picked a box, which could contain a lot of cash, in subsequent rounds they are in effect gambling with their own money”, said a spokesperson of the UK government in response to the investigation.

If the Gambling Commission concludes that Deal or No Deal involves gambling, there is a good chance that the result will be the same for the other shows.
