Remember the very first time registering to an online bingo site and there was that hesitation to divulge all your personal and banking information? Maybe you procrastinated or refused to sign up because there was an element of doubt and lack of trust. Taking that initial plunge into cyber space can be scary. We all soon realized that online bingo sites are as safe as any financial banking institution thanks to highly advanced encryption.

The real concern that many bingo players don’t think about is fraudsters posing as legitimate businesses via email accounts. This type of illegal activity is called “phishing”. Phishing involves using fictitious websites and emails to obtain the victim’s personal information.

It is very easy to fall victim to prey because the emails and links provided appear to be very legitimate. The phisherman will try to obtain account numbers, user names and passwords by posing as a bingo site or any other personal accounts such as financial institutions.

To avoid becoming victims of email fraud follow these tips:

• Never respond to unsolicited spam email
• Do not click on links or attachments that could contain a virus
• Avoid filling out any forms requesting your personal information
• Compare the link to the official website to determine any discrepancies
• Contact the official website to verify authenticity

Remember no legitimate website will ask you for your user name or password. If you feel you are a victim of an email scam report it to the official site immediately.
