Preston Buckingham Bingo closing after 2 years

The new Preston Buckingham Bingo hall that opened in a blaze of glory will sadly close on 29th March after just 2 years trading. Buckingham Bingo stated that the £4.1m club was no longer viable and to maintain the future stability of the other Buckingham Bingo clubs that are trading well they were forced to close the club that was underperforming.

When the Buckingham Bingo club in Preston first opened in a shower of publicity by actress Wendi Peters who played Cilla in the popular soap Coronation Street, it was reported to be the most luxurious and contemporary bingo club in the UK, with special design enhancements specifically aimed at making it accessible for all, and in particular disabled bingo players. The Preston club membership numbers on first opening were reported to be 14,000, with members travelling from as far afield as Lancaster, Blackpool and Southport.

This sad recurring story of bingo halls shutting is sounding the death toll for the traditional bingo game, luckily there is a very strong and successful online bingo presence. However bingo halls up and down the country provide a much needed sense of community to older people helping them to have the familiar sights and experiences of their usual bingo game, a welcoming oasis with friendly faces, fun and a few hours of gentle leisure time, and the possibility of course of a bingo win. The older bingo players are able to visit bingo halls with younger members of their families allowing them for a short time to be slightly detached from the modern world that is now swamped with bars and pubs with aggressive looking bouncers on the door. Lets hope that things very soon start to improve for an industry that provides such a special service to the community as a whole.
