Rickshaw riders provided a free pick-up service for the workers of Tyneside on Tuesday.

Models picked up Newcastle residents giving rides through the city centre to lift spirits.

Since January is considered a depressing month, Mecca Bingo organized the rides to spread some happiness.
Perry Coppin, a 26-year-old manager at Next, took a ride and met up with friends.

“It was a nice idea and I’ve never ridden in a rickshaw. Everyone’s skint in January and you do start to get a bit down when you look at your bank statement. It’s hard when business’ bring the pay forward before Christmas for staff too.

“I just get friends round or stay in at people’s houses with a bottle of wine and that keeps the giggles up,” said Perry.

Gavin Lee, a Mecca Bingo manager in the North East, said: “It’s considered to be the most depressing week of the year so we are just trying to cheer people up.

“People in Newcastle definitely don’t expect people to go to work on a rickshaw.

“We’re just trying to keep everyone motivated.”
