Kids Are Getting in the Game

These days the kiddies are being enticed with a drink, meal and a game of kids bingo while their parents enjoy a much needed bingo break.

In Australia the bingo clubs are offering prizes including gift vouchers for children as young as 5 all for a fiver.

Souths Juniors is the most recent club to launch bingo sessions for children as well as $360 worth of gift vouchers from greatest toy store on earth, Toys 'R' Us. Entry is $10 including a free meal and drink. Club spokesperson, Brad Smith, said the intent is not to promote gambling but to teach children numeracy skills.

"It's not really promoting gambling, it's giving them another form of entertainment for the parents and for the kids," he said.

Various clubs have jumped on the band wagon offering kids bingo, free movies and loads of prizes.

Independent Senator, Nick Xenophon, believes that bingo for kids is creating the next generation of problem gamblers. He believes that the state government should forbid the game because clubs are using it as a tool to recruit future gamblers.

"Forget about the dingo having my baby, it's a case of the bingo having my baby," Senator Xenophon said.

The senator also said the program will only "sanitise gambling for children".

The clubs stand by their program and say that it’s just a bit of harmless fun. There’s no doubt that the Senator’s opinion is extreme but does he have the children’s best interest at heart?
