When visiting your local newsagents you may have noticed a new set of game cards for the Health Lottery. A new Saturday night draw which is pledging to raise 50 million pounds for health related causes across the UK.

Joanna Page, co-star of Gavin and Stacey, is backing the new lottery because the causes supported are close to her heart. In an interview with the Daily Express she explained that her Nan was once a matron of a care home. She said, “I got involved with The Health Lottery because I’d like to see better care for the elderly.”

She also sympathized with young carers, explaining that the campaign could help them gain a much needed ‘break’ and a chance to experience a better childhood.

The Health Lottery is named after the good causes supported by 20% of all card purchases. The Lottery will give 20p of every pound spent on tickets to the People’s Health Trust which supports multiple health related causes across the UK.

The first Health Lottery Draw will take place tonight at 9:30pm, with a launch show hosted by Melinda Messenger. The 50 ball lottery awards prizes to players which match 3, 4 or 5 balls. Unlike the National Lottery these prizes are fixed with 3 balls winning £50, 4 balls winning £500 and 5 balls winning up to £100,000 (this top prize is split if there is more than one winner).

The Health Lottery can be played online, using paper tickets from the newsagents or a reusable plastic game card which records your chosen numbers. Initial signs suggest that the new format will be a runaway success, in a statement Martin Hall of the Health Lottery Said,”We have already raised several hundred thousand pounds for health causes.”
