A fire broke out in an old bingo hall during the late hours of Tuesday evening.

Firefighters fought the flames engulfing the former Mecca Bingo hall in Fountainbridge, for two hours after receiving a call at approximately 10:50pm.

In response to the call, 38 firefighters and 4 senior officers were sent to the scene armed with 10 appliances to fight the fire. The crew was required to cut away the building’s structure to gain access eventually extinguishing the fire at nearly 1:20am.

Confirmation from a spokesperson for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service established that the building was empty upon arrival and fortunately no one was hurt in the blaze.

Since October 2011, this is the 2rd incident of fire in the building. The building originally housed a dance hall called the Palais de Dance built in the 1920’s.

The source of the fire is not known at this time.
