All it takes for the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) is one complaint about an advertisement and they step into action. Many bingo and online gambling commercials have had the plug pulled due to public complaints.

The most recent under scrutiny was a Paddy Power radio advertisement that received 27 complaints. The ad was intended to be humorous but there was some who found nothing comical about it at all.

Jack Cooper wrote on Paddy Power Facebook wall: I'll give you anything for a decent offer Paddy!" We hear you Jack! Anything eh? Well, just chuck us a kidney and in return we'll give you ... this beauty for the golf. Back any player to win The Masters and if Tiger Woods wins, you get your money back! And, because there's another kidney where that came from, here's another cracker: We're playing six places on each-way bets! Bet online or on your Paddy Power mobile app and good luck with the dialysis. We hear you Jack Cooper!

One complaint came from the Kidney Wales Foundation that objected to the ad saying it was “offensive and likely to cause distress, in particular to kidney dialysis patients, transplant patients and their loved ones.”

After reviewing the ad the ASA took no action, investigating it under BCAP Code rules 4.2 and 4.10 (Harm and offence) but did not find it in breach. The ad represented Jack Cooper as a fictional character and most listeners would understand it was not a real life or a real life situation concluding that the ad would not cause widespread offense.
