A player’s husband at Gala Bingo got crushed but not by the competition. It happened outside the bingo hall when a metal gate came crashing down on his car.

Kenneth Compton, 80, was unlucky in this horrific accident but very lucky to be alive. The quarter ton gate landed on the bonnet of his car at the Gala Bingo Hall in Erdington, Birmingham after he dropped his wife off at bingo.

The incident slammed his Renault Scenic with such an impact it shattered the windscreen and left Mr. Compton with a head injury and fractured eye socket and suffers from dizzy spells.

He said: ‘It was absolutely terrifying but I'm OK now. I just want to move on now and forget all about it.'

His wife Ada, 82, added: ‘When I saw the picture of the car I was horrified.
‘He is very lucky to be alive.

‘He still has had a few dizzy spells but we're just glad he's still here.’

After an investigation it was discovered the locks had rusted and been removed and was the cause of the near fatal accident on June 3, 2011.

At Birmingham Magistrates Court, parent company Gala Leisure Limited was fined £25,000 last Friday after determining that Gala Bingo was negligent in replacing the barrier with a padlock at its Kingsbury Rd branch.
