South Africa currently prohibits online gambling while the government has contemplated the possibility of legalization for a number of years. Prompted by the gambling review commission, it’s possible the ban may be lifted as the legislation takes a closer look.

Online gambling is projected to expand 10% a year by 2015 according to Tom Tuxworth, public affairs manager for the British online gambling group Betfair. He goes on to say in a South African parliamentary portfolio committee meeting that prohibiting online gambling only breeds punters to offshore and unregulated websites.

Tuxworth backed up impressive numbers from H2 Gambling Capital and Gambling Compliance stating that SA could generate revenue in Rands 6 billion including Rand 1 billion in taxes to the state’s coffers each year.

He also pointed out the lucrative aspects of online gambling, giving opportunities to South Africa that would open up technology jobs and related advertising jobs.
