On Sunday the 1st July 2007 the UK smoking ban was officially put in place. The ban prohibits smoking in any enclosed public place including the UK's bingo halls. The smoking ban has had a dramatic effect on land based bingo halls in scotland and experts have predicted that the same will occur in the UK. The smoking ban is forcing bingo operators to diversify and change the way they opperate their bingo halls and they are thinking of new ways to entertain land based bingo fans.
The rank group who own and operate mecca bingo halls have announced an increase in their share prices. Rank said: In recent weeks we have begun to see some early signs of recovery. Shares climbed 6.5p to 187p. Matthew Gerard, analyst at Investec, said: They've beaten my expectations in every division.
Rank have implimented new features in their bingo halls. They have installed new shelters with electronic bingo equipment that allows bingo players to continue playing whilst having a smoke and are exploring other ways that they can play bingo outside so they can swerve the smoking bans rules. One thing that is clear is Rank are making changes for the better and players should feel confident that they will still have a place to play bingo, and if not then there is always online bingo to keep them entertained!
