Mecca Bingo is well known of course for their bingo, but also for their charitable side. One particular good cause that is very close to Mecca Bingo’s heart is Whizz-Kidz. Mecca Bingo support the Whizz-Kidz charity because of the outstanding support they provide to disabled young people and have raised over £300,000 since January 2008.
In fact Ian Burke the Chief Executive Officer for the Rank Group was so keen to do his bit for Whizz-Kidz and other charitable causes that he took part in a breath-taking 109km bike ride which took place in South Africa. Mecca Bingo are rightly proud of Ian, for not only completing the race around the Cape of Good Hope Peninsula in good time taking only 5 hours 19 minutes (and not forgetting the 29 seconds), but also because he beat actor Matt Damon’s race time by very nearly 90 minutes. Ian’s successful ride ensured that £21,000 was raised by his efforts alone for his chosen good causes, £16,000 of which will go directly to Whizz-Kidz.
Ruth Owen the Chief Executive of Whizz-Kidz, wanted to say a special thank you to not only Ian but also all the Mecca Bingo team and of course not forgetting the Mecca Bingo online and high street bingo players too, she said "I’d like to congratulate Ian for jumping into the saddle and raising such an amazing amount. We are absolutely thrilled with the enthusiasm and inventiveness of all Mecca team and club members in 2008, in raising over a quarter of a million pounds to support young wheelchair-users' independence.
Whizz-Kidz is all about giving disabled young people the opportunity to live active, independent lifestyles. Whizz-Kidz performs such a valuable service to children with mobility problems from supplying much needed mobility equipment, teaching wheelchair skills and techniques to providing life skills tuition to aid future independence.
