Charities profit through electronic bingo

With the help of the Kawartha Club Gaming Center, Peterborough charities managed to raise more than $1.5 million. And to illustrate the annual haul, Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal had presented a cheque to Mayor Paul Ayotte.

43 local charities had used electronic bingo terminal profits to raise the money. According to the general manager of Arbor Theatre, Beverley Breedon, the theatre troupe receives funds of about $60,000 a year. It is with the help of these funds that the theatre finds sufficient money to offset their expenses for their plays.

She said that they rely heavily on this funding for their troupe as they are a complete, non-profit organization. Pilot electronic bingo sites like Peterborough were introduced by the provincial government so that money could be raised for charities in the year 2005.

After its partnership with Ontario Lottery and Gaming, the program was expanded in 2007. In addition to these funds, Ayotte also praised the contributions they received from bingo players and local volunteers.

According to the president of Kawartha Bingo Sponsors Association, Darrell Rowe after the United Way campaign, the largest community fundraiser is bingo. He said that this contribution was a great one, which would not have been possible without the help of the local volunteers.
